Does anybody know how back up the address book in it. Ie the contacts.

No, serious: if its just for backup purpose, you can maybe copy the names.nsf file which is usually stored in /lotus/notes/data. Also, take a look at this document: http://experts.about.com/q/1427/3622303.htm
