anything worth looking at in preference to something like this?

We've got some of the 8 port versions of that at work for ad-hoc networking needs, they do work reliably enough though I can't comment on how fast they are since we're stuck in the days of 100Mbit.

Tricky

I use two Netgear Prosafe GS105's. Bought from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-GS105-5-port-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B0000E5SEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319627622&sr=8-1

Can't say too much about them, by their very nature. They sit there and do the job 24/7. Have had one of them for a year now and never had to reboot it. Recommended!
