After Bill (Padman on VS-UK) posted on the MoHAA board I have asked for clarification from Jolt as to whether what he said is in fact Jolt policy - ie no remote access to stop/start/restart game processes.

I have stated that if this is the case then I wish to cancel the server rental request.

If we have to email them to get a game process stopped and switched to another (or even restarted) then Jolt is a complete waste of time. I have the sneaking suspicion that ssh may only be available on Linux-only servers and Jolt have been somewhat less than forthcoming on the full story.....

Of course if the server rental request is cancelled then you will all either get full refunds (for those whose cheques/PO's have been paid into the bank) or I will just rip up your cheque.

If Jolt do in fact do not allow remote access then I for one can't see them surviving for very long.......

As soon as I receive a response I shall post back here.

Don't take this the wrong way.
But does it really matter if we dont have complete and immedate control
over what going on ?????????????
VS UK seem happy with theirs.

UK SkidMark

Well, if we've got 3 games that we're paying for on their, and you've booked a session for 8.00-12.00 with RTCW, and it's on MOHAA, are you willing to wait for someone at Jolt to remember to change it over?

adslrizla

Given that at the moment they take anywhere between 10 minutes and 5 days to respond to my emails regarding the server....

Lt.Swan

I personally dont mind whats on the server at any time .
i just want to be able to play on it  :)

adslrizla

Well other people do Swannie....

Remember VS-UK only have MoHAA on theirs - and Padman is not happy about having to email Jolt to get the server restarted.

Well, I know you'll make the right decision.

Is it technically that difficult to give us start/stop control over the game servers on Windows? If  the best they can do is to say send an e-mail to start a new game server then that isn't adequate.

The reply should be interesting.

adslrizla

It is no more or less technically difficult than it is under Linux - where I know they offer remote access.

Looks like there's a reason why Jolt only has one MoHAA clanserver (VS-UK) and Barry's has loads  :x

maybe by the time this is all sorted out there'll be hardware available on barrys again...

padman

Hi all,

just to clarify what we get from Jolt...
FTP access to MOHAA directory (useful)
NO start stop access...there is an auto restart for a server crash , but any major changes which involve a stop/start need to be done by Jolt...If the files are in use of course they cant be deleted....they can be overwritten by a file of the same name , but this is only read in by a server stop start.

Its not ideal , they have been pretty good and swift actually...BUT it does make the process cumbersome.
I have asked for access but no joy...they said if I want that we have to hire the whole server(at great cost)

Hope that helps

Thanks Bill. So it would appear that they've mis-sold the server to us. They offer "full admin rights" which in the context of a multi-game server has to include the ability to stop/start/change the running game process.

Still waiting for a response to the email I sent last night.....

mrstella

Is it just barrysworld and jolt that run these servers or are there other ppl that we can goto to check out. I dont mind spending some time looking around.

Regards

Peter

Bugger, you come back from 4 days in Barcelona and this has all been stirred up! Grrrrr.

Rizla, keep kicking arse, you're doing a great job.

Seems to me thay offer GAME ADMIN and not SERVER ADMIN.
Without clarification of this in the T&C they have missold us a product. I cant see us coming to some agreement with them, they obviously arent interested in accomodating us. Buggers!

Like the new avatar Riz BTW!

Padman - just to update you :

Went onto #jolt yesterday and talked to Bilb (Jolt Admin) who confirmed that there is no remote access other than rcon and ftp on Windows servers. Good job I met you on the AlliedAssault boards or we'd be stuck with a server of very limited use

Thanks for the info - you stopped us making a horrible mistake.....

Hi m8

hmmm so it is as I thought...glad I could be of help on this
It leaves you with no server , but at least you were able to make the decision having been given the true facts.

Let me know if I can be of any more help

All the best
