Title: HL2 : First impressions?
Post by: Calibrax on November 16, 2004, 11:21:40 PM
Post your first impressions here. Is it good or bad? does it live up to the hype? what are the best and worst bits about it?

My first impression is that the Royal Mail are a bunch of fucktards :S  My office is 2 miles away from gameplay, and yet despite the fact gameplay dispatched the game mid-afternoon on the 15th I'm still to receive delivery

Nice graphics...

Thats the only groundbreaking thing so far, not too far into the game i reckon, but then I dont really want to know how far I am.

Just taking my time to explore and shoot everything

Just Completed it :D

Spoliers ahead - I will possibly list every damn level and fun thing that happens in the game (or at least the ones my tired brain can remember), so dont read if you dont want to find out what happens, probably best to leave it until you have finished the game

Okay here we go: (its in tiny writing so you cant read it, unless you really want to)

Start off coming off a train, step into City 17 and you're immediatley told "Your safter here". Ah huh, like I really believe that. So we get pulled aside for a security check and it looks like im in for a beating - oh shit! Ahhh but wait, its barney (no, not the purple dinosaur, but the fat security guard from half life 1). Anyway, so theres some chatty bits, then a race across the city to see some mad scientist, was quite cool leaping across rooftops. And getting to see some parts of the city for the first time. There has been an amazing amount of detail and work gone into the game. I had fun flinging tvs out the window of the flats!

Some funny moments in the doods lab. Then as usual some accident, so you have to find your own way to some other doods lab.

The canal level was kinda cool, the funniest moment was the guards getting hit by the train.

Then the airboat level, absolutley brilliant, however I lost my airboat about halfway along so I had to walk the rest of the way (bollox). Fucking long walk I can tell ya that.

What was next, oh yeah eli's lab and fun with the gravity gun. Nice little interlude.

Then came ravenholm.

God fuck I hated that level - scared the shit out of me. Really fuckin hate that level.

The buggy level was great, had fun trying to dodge the train on the bridge. Quite a few puzzles along the way.

What the hell came next?!

Oh yeah, some cliff walk shite, ant lions and what not, that was cool.

Then as you break into Nova Prospekt, you gain control of a whole squad of ant lions. Amazing amount of battles went on in the prison complex. Most of the time, I just let my squad of ant lions tear everything apart while stood back and saved ammo.

Next level was the umm...

I think it was back to city 17.

Anyway, HEADCRABS, fuckin headcrabs everywhere - Hairy Japanese Bastards!

The fights in the city were amazing running down streets being chased by huge striders, then shouting "YAY!!!!" when you find a crate of RPG's and woot with delight when the RPG slam into the strider and take it down. My squad managed to have two doods equipped with RPG's and a medic (I need a medic!) and we had a great time firing our RPG's on the striders, just watching the rockets whizz round the striders legs before slamming right into the main body was amazing. All the time having to dodge not only bullets from the striders but also combine soldiers pushing into the main city square.

Absolutely fucking amazing. That entire level was almost a game in itself...

Oh shit I nearly forgot, having to dodge the supression field while you are making your way to the city hall. Another freakin cool bit.

I think I will be playing the city 17 level over and over again. And shooting all those bastarding headcrab fuckers...

Then the citadel level, you really have to see that for yourself, speechless during that level, my jaw was on the floor most of the way through it.

And the end sequence, which sets it up for half life 3 (you know there will be one.). Will be another 4-5 years I reckon.

There was nothing really groundbreaking. The graphics were totally amazing. The gravity gun was cool too. I had fun flinging stuff around and using various bits of metal as shields. Thats the trouble really, its nearly all been done now, but still, it was good. Not totally groundbreaking, OMG I just wet my pants playing this game type of thing.

Just good. Story sucked though, as usual more questions than answers... Although citadel level cleared a few things up...

Anyway, in short, it rocked in places.

As I read this the SP gameplay will be arround 24 hours?
That sounds pretty short .... ?

Graphics are really cool but the interactivity with it isn't much (can grab things and throw it but that's it).
I tried to fo some other ways in game but the game is just a one-way street :(

I'm still on the n00b lvl's I think so maybe it will be better later on in game.

Well, I'm about halfway through the game now, and I love it!

My impressions :

Graphics : The graphics are gorgeous. Water looks really good, reflections, textures... best looking game I've played (and I'm including Far Cry in that!) The graphics engine is a good one - I can run in 1600x1200 with no problems at all on my Radeon 9700 Pro and 2GHz PC. I thought my setup would struggle to be honest.

Sound : Excellent use of Dolby 5.1, scary as hell at times, and good atmospheric music. Impressive.

Gameplay : Great fun to play, exploring is fun. The game is somewhat linear, but then thats the usual with FPS games nowadays. Puzzles are not difficult to solve, but not dead easy either - about right I would say. Some HL1 puzzles needed a degree in cryptography to solve, happy to see this game doesn't make the same mistake. Plenty to see, plenty to do, and time just flies when you play. Good stuff.

The only thing that has disappointed me about the game is the fact you can't shoot out lights. :(

but at least you can wander into someone's flat and chuck all their stuff (telly included) out of their own window (http://www.no-smacktards.com/images/hl2/resized-hl2%202004-11-18%2021-49-00-70.jpg) :D

I downloaded the game from steam on weds and had my first bash last night. So far it seems to be a worthy successor to the orignal, which is something not too often heard of sequels in any form of entertainment, never mind games ;)

Of course, as luck would have it, the Royal Mail managed to get the retail copy i'd ordered from gameplay to me for this morning.. useless twonks! 2 miles in 4 days is quite an achievement.... if you're a tortoise...

It will (sort of anyway), Valve has promised to make a few extra chapters available through steam and of course there are 400+ mods planned for Half Life 2 (I am paitently waiting on the Co-op mod). No doubt other mods will have online play too.

Lol I took the wrong road in game and now I cannot return to the point I should have gone :-)
Only 4 saved games MAX (if you forgot to backup the saved games) :(
Now I have to start over the game as there's no workarround for it atm :-)

I'm sure I like the graphics but the single player missions are a little bit boring and empty I think.
Will try the online section soon.

Wrong! (sort of). Its true the game only keeps 4 autosaves but you can have as many manual saves as you want :D.

I have around 12 saves from where I saved it at various points during the game in my save directory :D
