Try to get the right drivers from the DVD player self insteaqd of the drivers provided by MickySoft.
Maybe windows update will provide you with the latest driver for some hardware.

xp sees it as a dvd drive, well i think it does, it calls it "dvd drive" in explorer, but that could just be reading some form of value from the drive's firmware :)

it's currently on ide1 with my hdd, so i might try moving it to ide2 to see if that makes any difference..

fyi it's a Sony DDU1612 16x DVD-ROM drive

omg

/me slaps Fluffy.

Never put an Optical on the same cable as a HD man, bad things happen when u do that, like causing all yer HD's to default to ATA66/33 and data going missing.....

ALWAYS put opticals on a separate IDE channel to IDE drives.... That could well be yer issue dawg...

I call ballony on that..

ATA channels will default to the speed of the slowest device, this is true, however the speed the channel is working at will not effect the integrity of the data stored on the drive or stop the DVD drive from detecting a DVD.

How fast your hard drive performs when connected to the same channel as your cdrom, depends on your controller. It isn't true that performance slows down when you have a cdrom on the same channel as your hard drive, and a quick benchmark using SiSoft Sandra will tell you that. Performance only slows down if your are accessing both drives at the same time as they share a cable. This will also happen with two hard drives connected to the same channel, and you are accessing both drives simultaneously. It really makes very little, if any, difference with todays modern controllers, so do whatever is most convienient for keeping your cables neat and tidy. If you have a fast cd burner, then you might be better having it on a separate controller to minimise sharing the data connection, though with burnproof feature being common on todays drives it shouldn't make much difference.

Doesnt make any difference anyhow.. the drive still can't recognise dvds. (ut2k4 & movies)

I suggest you return this one (did you check the latest drivers?).

Did you activate a region code on it cause that's NOT needed!

Maybe try a different IDE cable, could be something wrong with the connector.

For 15 quid, might as well RMA it and not worry about it anymore...

I agree with what Paul has said to a certain extent, but you all know i am after performance, so i aint putting an optical and a HD on the same channel, and like i said, it might just be coincidence that when i had the Optical and the HD on the same channel in my IIS i started to have data going missing. Its all about whether you are willing to accept that slight loss in performance. I'm not. Ever. I dont spend huge amounts of cash making my machine fast as hell just to have it slowed down by an optical drive...

What's wrong with IIS Fluffy? At least the language i use looks like english rather than Alien :P

Mmmm I have my Harddisk and DvD play on IDE 1 and my burner on IDE 2 and sometimes my PC isn't starting rights BUT I can make good copies of CD's and copies from my Harddrive?
Those days of running games from swapiong between HD and CD are over as most game developers make sure that all files are copied to the Harddrive for better performance so I don't see a point in having them seperated?

P.S. So your problem is solved |Fury|?

well no, I'm going to have to RMA the drive so the issue of not being able to play ut2k4 is still there :)  maybe i'll have to install it on my office machine (the one with the dvd burner in it).. it's an xp2700 with 1gb ram and a ti4600 in it so it might cope ok

scoob - no its not a cable problem - have used different cables with the same result
