BT Wholesale is to begin a six-week trial of a new 1 Mb ADSL service aimed at home users, the monster telco confirmed today.

IPStream Home1000 - as it's called - could give ISPs the chance to take on speedier services offered by cablecos NTL and Telewest. Then again...

The trial starts on October 6 following internal tests during September. The monthly wholesale rental for the trial is ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£23 (ex VAT) with ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£50 (ex VAT) for activation.

According to details released by BT Wholesale today, BT IPStream Home 1000 will be a 'wires only' self install product.

All ISPs currently reselling BT's ADSL service will be able to take part in the trial and will be able to sign up as many punters as they like during the pilot stage. BT will start accepting applications from ISPs from September 1.

Explaining that punters can opt for different packages, the telco said it will be possible "to migrate or regrade users from BT IPStream Home 500 to BT IPStream Home 1000, and vice versa, during the trial and from launch", although there is likely to be a fee for this flexibility.

BT Wholesale announced back in March that it planned to trial a 1Mbps ADSL service in the autumn

*ehrmm* A swedish ISP has just launched a DSL service called "Scream", which means 26 Mbps, in both directions. The monthly fee is around ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£29 and ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£100 for activation   :D  :D

Sounds great for sure, but i actually think that launching a product like that for that price (aka home user price) is quite irresponsible. The system we have now simply wouldn't be able to handle poeple KaZaA'ing at 26Mbps each way. Im quite happy to watch the speeds gradually increase (fair enough BT could be a *bit* quicker ;) ).

Sure technology improves every day to cater, but that's like launching a Ferrari for ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£500 90 years ago.

I don't belive they can deliver 26mbps most of the time, except maybe  between their own customers from time to time, but I'd be more than satisfied with half speeds ;)

We have another ISP called Bredbandsbolaget (The Broadbandcompany) who delivers 10 Mbps in both directions for almost the same monthly fee, and have done that for several years now, and it works surprinsingly well.

And yes, it might be abit irresponsible, but as long as I get it and it works, they can be as irresponsible as they like :)

*Blowing the dust of an ancient thread*

Just found out that I could get a 2MB dsl line for ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£30/month (without any traffic limitations), so I called my ISP and thought I'd get some info about it. After some 40 mins in telephone que the nice lady told me it would be no activation fee and it would take max 4 hours to activate it. 1 min after I hung up, the line dropped, and after 1 more minute I had a wonderful 2MB line. :D

I had a 2MB connection, and a few months ago switched it back to a 1MB because I just wasn't getting the use out of it. I found that most of the time the place I was downloading from was a bottleneck, so the download speed was under 1MB most of the time.

My company pays for me to have a 1MB line, and I was paying extra for the 2MB capacity... which just wasn't getting used. So, until the internet itself speeds up, there's very little point in having a mega fast line... I find the 1MB is just fine.  And I think I probably download more stuff than the average user.

I found that 95% of the stuff I downloaded was coming through at much lower speeds than 2MB. Now I'm on 1MB I don't notice any reduction in the speed of my downloads... probably because here in the UK the infrastructure that the web is built on is very low tech compared to somewhere like Sweden with it's fibre-optic network. We still have copper wire as the main basis for our network *sob*... :(

Talked with a friend of mine today, who informed me that my ISP is offering 8 Mbit connections for our area, so I rushed to the phone and called them. So now I got a 8 MB line :multi:

This time they wanted ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£20 for the upgrade, but my monthly cost is still ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£30/month and I got no limitations in traffic :D

Now it's really a need for a new and larger HDD ;)
