Ok, I want to be able to run two PCs side by side, both sharing an internet connection.
I currently have a PC, connected to a cable modem via a network card.
I also have a laptop which has a PCMCIA network card, but isn't currently conneced to anything.
Finally, I have a Netgear mini hub which is sitting in a draw because I don't know what cables I need to connect it, and even if I did know which cables, I would have no clue where to start.
What I need is an idiot proof guide to connecting these up... bearing in mind that there is something called a MAC address which Blueyonder needs to have registered before I can connect. The current MAC address is the one for my network card (the one in my PC), presumably I will need the MAC address of the hub, and I don't know how to get that.

you'd need the mac address of each lan card.
However....unless you're using a router (i'm guessing you're not) you'll not be able to just plug both machines into a hub and away you go - you'll only have one ip address externally. You'd need a router to work out which packets are for which machine on the network.
I reckon what you're going to have to do is buy another lan card for your pc, plug yer lappy into it with a crossover cable and set up internet connection sharing.
it'd mean you'd have to have both computers on though..
I agree, a cross over cable is proably the best bet.
It is what I use between my PC & laptop.
Are you running Windows 2000?
If so it couldn't be easier.
Just put another network card into your pc. connect your cross over cable to this and your laptop.
then go into your network connections. Find the one for your broadband. Right click on this and click onthe sharing tab and allow internet sharing.
Job done. Don't forget if you have a firewall you'll need to setup it up to allow traffic to the laptop.
Finally if you wish to share file & folders etc. In Win 2000 when you share the folder, lets say the C:\. When you try and share it, the share name for the drive will be C$ this wont work. You'll need to change this to just C.
It may be worth also installing the NETBUI protocol.
This may be a bit much to take in all at once. You also may not be using Win 2000!!

sharing over tcp/ip should work fine. just make sure you're on the same subnet, and keeping the machines in the same workgroup will make life a little easier ;)
Indeed, if you are runnin Win 2000. Should be simple man!
I also did this and this is how:
1 pc with 2 networkadapters, use 1 adapter for the internet, use the other with a crosscable and connect it to the laptop.
Share the internet on the first adapter and it should be working.
Problem is that you will have to switch on both pc's this way :(
There are other ways to do it, but this worked for me at the time. :)
The C$ is the administrative share in Win2k, if you use an different name it will be without the $.
