Well, I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my graphics card! :D :D
I considered the Radeon 9700 Pro, but didn't really wanna spend over ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£300.... :?
So, I've just ordered a Gainward AGP GeForce4 Ti4800SE 128MB DDR "Ultra/750-8X XP Golden Sample" (Retail Version) from www.komplett.co.uk for a shade under 175 quid. Should have it in a day or two. 8)
Anyone got a good home for a Ti500? will sell for 70 quid! :wink:

Also i read somewhere that the 4800 is simply a 4200 on the 4600 pcb, its basically a Ti4200 with a couple more bells and whistles. Dont know how true it is but thats what i read.

Gainward Ti4200's suffer from the pink chequerboard of death, theres a huge thread about it here (http://www.amdforums.com/showthread.php?s=f561db6ae6a44f4cacfd323c0c5a698f&threadid=166031&perpage=15&pagenumber=1) - Personally I wont buy another gainward ever again! 8O
I'm after a new video card as well (blows dust off of current GeForce 2 GTS), but I want to see the price and performance of the GeForce FX when it comes out, now if I could only find out when there going to be available.. :? :?

Wolverine, the one that's under ÃÆ'ââ,¬Å¡Ãƒâ€šÃ,£200 isn't the Pro... it has lower speeds than the Pro version.
9700 - 275MHz / 270MHz (540MHz DDR) clock speeds
9700 PRO - 325MHz / 310MHz (620MHz DDR) clock speeds

I wish Nvidia would sort out their confusing naming conventions. I thought, quite naturally, that the 4800 was the successor to the 4600... anyway, their loss and ATI's gain, I guess. :roll:

I'ver never used anything but Ati/based products and they all seem great 2 me 8),Would you realy know the diffrence with the speed of 2 days processors and memory.Feel free to baffel me with science

The difference at lower resolutions isn't much. But at high res (1600 x 1200) you see a
massive difference. If you want to be baffled by science, check out this review of the Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro (http://www.guru3d.com/review/sapphire/radeon9700pro/) (the one I ordered). Lots & lots of science there!!

Well after looking around and not being able to get a date for GeForce FX release, I've bit the bullet and ordered a Hercules 3D Profit 9700 Pro, my PC will be more of a bottleneck that the graphics card. First time I'll have used an ATI card..
Should be here on Monday (crosses fingers)

judging on the review i've seen at tomsharware undergrid, i think you went with the right card.. the fx might be faster but at what cost? the noise that card makes is bloody mental..
One word for you guys, Drivers.
At the minute the difference between the cards is very little, but with the ever evolving Detonator drivers, i think we will be seeing a bigger difference in performance between the cards develop in the not too distant future.
Plus, to be perfectly honest i just dont like Radeons, NVidia is living up to the legend that was Voodoo and 3DFX and the best can only be yet to come. Plus this is the base version of a new chipset and ram combo, with a little tweaking it will definatley blow ATi out of the water.
I guess i am NVidia forever........ and i will never turn to the darkside even if some of my buddies have........ muahahahahaahahahahaa :D

Well its here but its having a few problems..
Video file playback of a known good file produces an image which has small flickering black spots at random locations (the sort of thing you might see occasionally watching a cini type film), and sometimes some polygons apear to be distorted (two points will be in the right place, but the third might be positioned in the wrong axis causing a polygon to point up out of the floor for example). These problems have been happening with both the Catalyst 2.5 and 3.0 drivers..
I'm going to try a clean install tonight before I jump to any conclusions, it may after all be bits of nVidia drivers still lying around (even though I did uninstall them first), but if anyone has seen these effects and knows a solution please let me know.
I haven't had any problems with video playback, I'm using Catalyst 3. I do have Direct X 9 installed, dunno if that would make any difference... my card is a different make (Sapphire), but they should be basically the same. It'll probably clear up with the clean install. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Found out what may be causing it (after a long install, waiting for windows update is worse than terminal jobs!) and its only partly due to the ATI drivers. They decided to enable fast writes when they were installed, and I've had problems with that before with this motherboard. Disabled fast writes and the video artifacts are gone. So now I'm installing E&B to make sure all the ploygon's are in the right place..
