Title: Hamster 5 Problem
Post by: BigBazza on May 15, 2002, 07:53:21 PM
Hello all

Last night (Tuesday) I tried to get on to Hamsterserver5 but couldn't due to "Server timed out" problems.  After 30 mins of this, I gave up and I went to one of the other Hamsterservers and got on first time.

I've tried again tonight on Hamsterserver 5, and the same problem is happening. My SAR703 router is showing that there is no, or very little data being sent or received during the connection attempt. Just a couple of half-hearted flashes on the lights at the front.  Normally the lights would be solid when attempting a connection.  I can get onto Ham4 with no problem.

Ham5 was empty when I tried this tonight.  I have all the maps,  MOH is patched to 1.11 and it worked fine 'till last night.

Post if you have any idea what the problem is.  I think I've run out of swear words to yell at the computer.  Any more would be welcome.

1.4 Ghz Athlon, Windows ME. Pipex ADSL Activated 9th April

Barry

P.S  And the sad thing is. using All Seeing Eye I could see that Tricky was on, and I really wanted to see if he is as good as everyone says.  Bugger

That default server connection timed out message isn't very helpful at all.

When you see the server connection timed out message bring down the console by hitting the key above TAB and then have a look to see what messages from the server are in there.

To enable the console go into main menu and then options then advanced and tick the enable console option.

Hi Spikeyfist

Followed your advice and got this at the end

213.221.175.162:29962 resolved to 213.221.175.162:29962
UI_DrawConnect called
Server is for low pings only
Server is for low pings only
Server is for low pings only
Server is for low pings only
Server is for low pings only
Connect to server timed out
UI_DrawConnect called
Disconnected from server

Not a lot really.  I think it timed out, and something tells me "it's low ping only"  :D

Time for a drink

Barry

Humm, currently Hamster5 is set for a max ping of 200, So you should have got on  :?

Hi BigBazza

Well the 'low pings only' message is there because Hammy5 is setup to prevent people with high pings from connecting (over 200 I think) The fact you weren't doing anything else with your connection (you did say the lights weren't flashing on you're router) would suggest you're maybe having a problem with you're ISP. I'm not on Pipex so I don't know if they're currently having network problems - It maybe worth checking!

As for getting on the other servers - most of them have maxpings of 300-400 so you can get on even with a poor ping. :)

If there isn't a problem on the Pipex network I suggest you re-boot you're router. Sometimes this can help to clear 'unusual errors'

Good Luck

P.S. Yes Tricky is very good :x

But I'll get him eventually

What about us poor 56 ker hammies who will ping, on the whole, just over the 200 mark. :(

8O Are we not going to be allowed to play with the big boys until we've grown  up and opened our wallets and installed ASDL, lol

Death

I'll try upping it to 250ms, but I'm reluctant to put it much higher.

Reason : this is the challenge ping (that allows you to join) and in-game pings are frequently much higher. eg I have seen people playing with pings around the 300ms mark with the current maxping setting.

Once you start getting people pinging 350-400ms or so then it just screws the game up for the majority of the other players and I'd obviously like to avoid that.

Still we'll give it a try and see what happens tonight.....

Its strange, but every time I look at Hamster-5 through gamespy it says I'm pinging at 500ms or more! But when I try and join anyway I get a really good ping of around 50ms!!

Whats that all about? Is gamespy just pants??

That'll explain it then

Is it worth checking out this All Seeing Eye jobbie then?

I think so - I thought it was so good that I actually paid to register it.....

Yeah

It's far quicker/simpler/more reliable/more usefull than Gamespy. And it's not so green!

Humm I like GameSpy when it says what it says when it starts up i.e. you can hear a voice through the speakers. Goes downhill after that though rapidly! I've registered both GameSpy and ASE and TBH see very little difference between the two although I favour ASE.

I'm amazed BigBazza doesn't get in and would like to know his ISP and what sort of results ping -t <bwserverip> return.
Title: Problems connecting

Is it just hammie 5 he has probs with? I've seen him on hammie 3 plenty of times, and that's got similar maxping settings.

Could be whatever routing is used to Hamster5

If Big bazza were to do :-

C:\>tracert 213.221.175.162

We may spot a troublespot

Didnt know that Ham 5 had similar ping settings to 3, i get on there well ok Riz.

Doubt i will get on ham 5 tonight as Skid (bless him) is copying the maps for me as im on 56 and will be here next week still downloading. Will try it out and join you all for a game once i'ver got the maps from Skid.

In the meantime you can cum and kill me on 3, sadly most nights! if you want to.

OK well I'm setting it back to 200ms now - could see pings "wobbling" in that last game. If you see lots of people playing on Hammy5 then that might be it - the box is "too busy" to respond immediately and hence your challenge ping goes up. Try when there's <8-10 on and see what happens....
Title: Same problem
Post by: stuka on June 03, 2002, 05:53:12 PM
I have the same problem. I downloaded 50meg of maps yesterday and tried to get to #5 for hours but each time it timed out. I was set to ISDN on my ADSL line, and they were never more than half full so I'm really confused. I tried again today and its the same again.
Title: Probs connecting
Post by: UK SkidMark on June 03, 2002, 07:04:17 PM
You say you had problems connecting, what about other servers? Are they ok?
Do you use ASE or Gamespy? Did you have a password set?
Where did it leave you when you failed to get in?
Title: It worked
Post by: stuka on June 03, 2002, 07:45:24 PM
I tried this server as I'm a bit fed up of the standard maps, and I connect ok to Barry or Jolt etc etc without problem, (except the dire ping) .
BUT....I got in Hamster tonight eventually. The only change I've made is to set ADSL speed, whcih I think is meant to be bad, but it seemed to work.
My ping is usually 50 or 60.
I use GSA, and no passwords (not sure I understand that question though) and it just kept dumping me out to the Timed Out dialog box.
Still, it obviously works if I persevere, so I guess theres nothing fundamental wrong.
Regards
Stuka
PS - Getting my ass kicked as I dont know the maps yet. Gee.. those guys are rurthless!!
Title: Still the same
Post by: stuka on June 04, 2002, 02:23:29 PM
Just to say my luck didn't hold out, I now cannot connect again due to time outs.  :(

Title: The Farm
Post by: UK SkidMark on June 08, 2002, 03:13:10 PM
Whilst playing in the private game last night, we switched to The Farm, I got the logo up and the scrolling box as it loaded, got about 1 second of picture, then dumped back to the multiplayer screen  :(
Tried it a few times, each time the same thing. Downloaded the mappack again to be sure, same thing, even tried a copy from AlliedAssault.com, but that was identical.

Anyone else have problems?

Similar here Skid, sometimes got as far as you did , sometimes into game but when I went to "Select Weapon" I was dumped back to start screen, after about 4 attempts I eventually got on, but at one point was trying to go out of a barn and couldn't get out, or is this a bug in the map ?
I think Hunter was having problems getting on also, I don't know if its because I have all the different  Farm versions in my main folder or not.
Other than that, it was an enjoyable evening :)
Even with f2s' high pings :x

I don't like The Farm much at all. That's strange for me because objective games are my favourite. It think it's because it's too spread out and there's too many ways in and out so the game ends up being about lots of individual battles. I prefer working in teams and having big firefights which you dont get on The Farm.

Yep I sort of agree Tricky. However I think it's nice to have obj maps where one person can go off on their own and blow one of the objectives. The Hunt is just the same - no way are you getting through as a team, but just one of you might if they're sneaky enough
