Title: Barryserver subscribers
Post by: adslrizla on May 10, 2002, 09:23:04 PM
The following is (AFAICT) the final list of the Barryserver subscribers (some of the usernames are AG ones as that's where the original list was compiled from) :

Subscribers

Rizla
MikeT
Spikey
BlankFrank
Skidmark
Tricky
Bookey
JonathanHodd
mordred
Olli
Undergrid
Cookie

If your name does not appear above then please do not take it as an insult. I took advice from someone who has been doing this sort of thing for a while and he advised me that 10-12 people are the absolute maximum manageable for this sort of endeavour. Everyone on the above list should have seen the post I made earlier on the "Admin and Moderator Chat board" or received a PM of that post from me. If you haven't then let me know.

Those of you "left off" the list who had actually paid for Jolt will still be able to make bookings on the Barryserver. If your booking conflicts with a subscriber and you can't resolve it between yourselves then the subscriber gets the booking.

Onto the subject of Admins. As I will have to give out my login details for Barrys then I have had to be fairly careful about who I picked. The following list of people will have the ability to stop/start/change the server and to make bookings :

Core Admins

Rizla
MikeT
Spikey
BlankFrank
Skidmark

The rest of the subscribers will have rcon access to the server (provided the game supports it) and will have the password for the private slots.

I realise this may come as a shock to some of you left off the list, but the list was compiled as follows :

a) People I knew reasonably well;
b) A consensus view amongst the core admins (which modified my original list).

Hopefully you will accept this post in the spirit it is intended - I do not wish any of you left off to feel that this is some sort of personal slight. Some very hard choices had to be made and I hope we've got it right this time.

As far as the Jolt payments go I have taken a decision to repay (or rip up your cheque) next Tuesday if you are not on the list of Barryserver subscribers. This leaves me open to some financial risk, but I think it's only fair. I will sort the tossers at Jolt out one way or another.

Anyway - on to the good news  The Barryserver booking system is excellent and I hope you will all make use of it. The server switches to the new game without any intervention required - so you're not reliant on me (or another core admin) to remember to do it. Please take a look at all the games/mods available (there's shed-loads!) and think about how many people are likely to join your booked game. I don't want the server unused during booked periods!

For the moment (until I'm sure of all the little quirks of the booking system) can you PM me with any requests for bookings?

I do hope you all take this the right way  :)

Quick question ?

So if you are not on the list, you cannot access the server without booking it prior ??

Regards

Peter

No - you can use it as normal. I assume by "access" you just mean "play on it"?

Yep i mean to get access to play on it.

Its just i thought your post meant that only the ppl subscribing could play on it.

No - anyone can play on it. However only subscribers are guaranteed to get on - a slot may have to be freed up for them. This won't be done for non-subscribers (well it might be sometimes, but not often).

Benefits : Well the one above for a start; booking games; rcon access which isn't just for kicking peeps - you can use it to change map, gametype, number of private slots, etc etc;

Basically as a subscriber you have full control of the server - fed up with playing one map and can't be bothered to wait 2 hours until it gets to the map you do want to play? Just change it. Want a game where there's only 10 public players so you aren't being spawnkilled all the time? Increase private slots. Server lagging because people from Australia are playing on it with pings of 800? Reduce maxping.

I think once people start using the booking system they will see the benefits. eg : you know your other half is out between 8 and 10 next Wednesday - book the server so you're sure of being able to play what you want.

You have to request a slot via an Admin (subscibers take priority). The process is yet to be sorted out but will probably be done via these forums.

This is because you need a Username & Password (which gives access to confidential info BTW) so the actual booking on the Barry's system can only be done via Admins.

Swannie - I have looked hard at this thread, but I can't see it.

Can you show me where it says that we're going to boot you off?

Any of you guys who we know (but aren't subscribers) will - as far as I'm concerned - be the last people asked to leave to make room for subscribers. The situation shouldn't arise as there was only 16 people who paid for Jolt and we normally struggled to fill up MikeT's 16 player server.

If you're talking about asking people to leave to make room for one of you guys who were Jolt subscribers, but aren't BW subscribers then that's down to to subscribers playing on the server - they all have rcon access and can do that at the end of a map. Speaking personally if I'm on and made aware that you want on then I'll make room for you, but only at the end of a map.

can you tell a subscriber is waiting to get on? or can said subscriber make room for himself before joining game. 'spose he'd have to really.

i can see why i'm not an admin  :)  :)

The subscriber can use rcon to make this known. Basically this is what you'd do :

1) Open console
2) type rconAddress 213.221.175.162:29963
3) then type rconPassword <password>
4) then type status and look to see who's on
5) Let's say you see me so you type say rizla, it's cookie can you free up a slot please Do this two or three times just to make sure the person you're talking to sees it.
6) I set an extra private slot for you and at the end of the map ask somebody to leave
7) You join using the private slot password.

Now this is bloody cumbersome and I think a better way of doing it would be for someone who isn't running an ickle Hamsterserver to run a TS server. When one of us goes to play then they just login to that server and uses that to listen for people who can't get on. In that case if you see the server is full then you just logon to TS and ask for a slot to be freed up - this has the advantage that the person you're talking to can tell you how long you have to wait until the map is finished.

At the moment I've set the server to 15 public slots and 5 private - nobody seems to have problems getting on. I think 14/6 would be better as that way you don't use the password unless you see the server showing 14/14. Six private slots should be ample - we don't have very many new big maps on and 14 players is more than enough for most maps. All of this can be discussed anyway - pop over to the irc channel Cookie (you can use the webclient on www.hamsterserver.net) and have a chat. We need to get you to register at Barry's anyway so you can see the booking diary etc...

I hope these ramblings made some sense to somebody

had to wait 1/2 an hour for slot to free up this evening
would it be possible for other HamsteRs but non BS and non jolt ( I never had the chance) to use TS in same way?

Sorry Bravo

We can only do this for subscribers (there has to be some reward for paying     )

It's the only fair way I'm afraid!! :)

But It is worth the wait!! :D  :D

So are you guys planning to run any team games on the Barry Server, like the good old days when you used to post a thread asking for people to put their names down to play.   8)
